Automotive and auto locksmiths are often the first to find themselves locked out of their homes after a long weekend, with some locking down their vehicles even more securely than before.
Autos, cars and homes all have different locks, and many are built from a single, common material.
What if that material is metal?
What if it’s not made of the same material?
And what if the lock is a locked plastic enclosure?
For the first time, experts have uncovered some answers to these questions and the answer may surprise you.
A metal lock in a plastic enclosure The answer to these problems lies in metal locks.
The latest research from the US and UK has found that plastic, plasticised aluminium, aluminium oxide and other common metal locks are better at protecting cars from theft.
The key to this is the “battery” – the plastic or aluminium shell containing the lock.
If the battery is corroded or damaged, it can cause a loss of power and even damage the locks.
But in the case of a metal lock, it’s much harder to break the battery.
Instead, it must be connected by a connection cable.
This connection can be made to a standard wire or wire tether and is typically used in cars and boats to connect to electrical outlets, water taps and power outlets.
In other words, you can’t simply use a car battery charger.
Instead the batteries must be powered by a car engine, a battery charger or even a solar panel.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin discovered that this connection is much harder for plastic, aluminium or aluminium oxide locks.
In fact, the researchers say they had to make some small modifications to the locks to get them to work with the new battery-powered locks.
These modifications include a plastic ring that protects the metal ring in the lock when it’s connected to a battery and a metal ring that can be attached to the battery to prevent the metal from corroding.
And although it is possible to buy a plastic battery charger to power these locks, the new research found that the connection cables themselves are not a good fit for these types of locks.
Instead they need to be made from solid metal wire.
The researchers say this wire is more durable than the batteries that they found to work well with the metal rings, but the problem still remains.
“Our research suggests that in some situations, the use of plastic or metal locks could have an adverse effect on the longevity and reliability of the lock,” the researchers write.
So, what about the other locks that the researchers tested?
The results are not all that encouraging.
For the first study, the team tested 10 of the most common lock types and found they all performed well.
The researchers say that although the majority of these locks are not as effective as their metal counterparts, it does mean that a lot of cars could be safer in the long run.
To find out which locks performed the best, the scientists used the same technology to test the metal and plastic locks.
“We were able to use these two types of lock in conjunction with a battery to determine which locks were more effective at locking vehicles,” the scientists said.
“In our case, we found that both types of metal and plastics had a significant advantage over their metal equivalents.”
So how do you prevent a car from being stolen?
The best solution is to make sure you have enough batteries and lock locks.
If you do not, you may be tempted to try the battery-equipped locks, but this may be more of a gamble than the researchers would like to see.
